When Can I fly after Surgery?
This is a commonly asked question.
Flying poses two potential hazards for post operative patients in particular.
1. Prolonged immobility on the flight.
This can further add to your risk of getting a DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) or clot in your limb. Because of this we recommend avoiding Long Haul flights for three months after joint replacement surgery.
For other limb surgery we recommend avoiding long haul flights until full gentle mobility has been restored in the limb
2.Decreased air pressure
following a fracture which has had a cast applied to it this increases the risk of swelling in the limb and is the reason that many airlines insist on a doctors note if you have a complete limb cast.
The evidence available suggests that 72 hours after application of the cast you are safe to travel in a normal commercial airline
